Our Story

Safe Start is the education and training program of our parent organization, Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance, a 501(c)3 founded in 1961.  Safe Start provides evidence-based, no-cost educational classes and professional training to parents, caregivers, first responders and medical professionals with a primary focus on infant sleep and child passenger safety.  

Our Story

A Brief History

1961 What will become Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance is founded in Seattle, Washington by 8 loss parents as a way to reach other families affected by what at the time was called “crib death”.  

2012 Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation is formed by Liz Montgomery  to provide safe sleep education and support services to parents that had suffered the loss of a child

2019  Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation and Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance combine to form the new NISSA, one non-profit serving the Northwest by providing safe infant sleep and car seat safety education as well as support for anyone who has suffered a pregnancy, infant or child loss.

2020  Safe Start, a program of NISSA, is created to be the Education and training arm of NISSA, Healing Together is created to be the support arm of NISSA and Every Child to be NISSA’s awareness arm.
